not sure which previous class you're referring to. i just took another look at the first feature spread comps you did... my biggest feeling is that the block of type is too much, hard on the eyes. doesn't make me want to read it.
but i like that you're going for the shape/text idea. you should take a look at the spd annuals, a lot of designers have done this and i've seen some really good ones. k
